Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-08-22

This Privacy Policy explains how Want (“Want,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal information when you use our website, mobile applications, and related services (the “Service”). The Service is offered only to United States residents who are at least eighteen (18) years old.

1. Information we collect

1.1 Information you provide

  1. Account information: email address, display name, password (stored as a hash by our authentication provider), and, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the identifiers those providers return to us.
  2. Listing content: the title, description, category, budget, condition, general location, and reference photos of the Wants you post; the offers and messages you send.
  3. Payment information: the US$0.99 Posting Fee is processed by Stripe on the web and by Apple In-App Purchase on iOS. On the web, Stripe collects and processes your payment card details directly, and Want receives only a payment identifier and a status, not your full card number. On iOS, the purchase is billed to your Apple ID; Apple sends Want’s server a signed transaction identifier we verify with the App Store Server API, and Want does not receive your Apple payment method or card number.
  4. Support communications: the content of any messages you send to support, safety, or legal contacts.

1.2 Information collected automatically

  1. Device and log data: IP address, device type, operating system, browser, app version, referrer URL, and timestamps of requests.
  2. Usage data: pages viewed, features used, search queries, and interactions with listings and messages.
  3. Cookies and similar technologies: see our Cookie Policy.
  4. General location: we derive an approximate location (city or region) from your IP address for search relevance and fraud prevention. We do not collect precise GPS location by default.

1.3 Information from third parties

If you sign in through Apple or Google, we receive the account identifier and, if you consent, your name and email. If Stripe flags a payment as high risk, we receive that signal.

2. How we use information

  1. To create and maintain your account and authenticate you.
  2. To publish and display Wants, offers, and messages.
  3. To process the Posting Fee and prevent fraud.
  4. To operate, secure, monitor, and improve the Service.
  5. To enforce our Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and Prohibited Items policy.
  6. To respond to your requests and to legal process, and to protect the rights, safety, and property of Want, our users, and the public.
  7. To send transactional messages (for example, account and safety notices). We do not send marketing email in v1 without opt-in.

3. Legal bases (for users protected by GDPR-style laws)

The Service is offered only in the United States and we take reasonable steps to prevent access from other jurisdictions. To the extent any privacy law with a legal-basis requirement applies to you, we rely on: performance of the contract (to operate your account); our legitimate interests (in security, fraud prevention, and improving the Service); your consent (for cookies that require it and for optional features); and compliance with legal obligations.

4. How we share information

  1. With other users. Your display name and the content of your Wants, offers, and messages are shown to the users you intend them for or to other users of the Service, depending on the feature.
  2. With service providers (processors). We share information with vendors that operate the Service on our behalf, each under a data-protection agreement:
    • Supabase, Inc. — database, authentication, storage, and realtime messaging.
    • Stripe, Inc. — payment processing for the Posting Fee on the web.
    • Apple, Inc. — In-App Purchase processing on iOS (the Posting Fee is billed by Apple and we verify the resulting signed transaction with Apple’s App Store Server API).
    • Vercel, Inc. — web hosting and edge delivery.
    • Apple Inc. and Google LLC — identity federation when you sign in with Apple or Google.
    • Resend, Inc. (or an equivalent) — transactional email delivery, if enabled.
  3. For legal reasons. We may disclose information to comply with law, valid legal process, or a lawful government request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Want, our users, or others. See our Law Enforcement Guidelines.
  4. Business transfers. If Want is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to a policy no less protective than this one or, where required, your consent.

We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

5. Retention

We retain personal information for as long as your account is active and for a limited period thereafter to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and enforce our Terms. Typical retention periods:

  1. Account records — life of the account plus 12 months.
  2. Wants, offers, and messages — life of the account plus 12 months.
  3. Payment records — seven (7) years for tax and audit purposes.
  4. Moderation records and safety logs — up to seven (7) years, or longer if required by law or a preservation request.
  5. Server logs — typically 90 days.

6. Security

We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, including row-level security on our database, encryption in transit, encrypted storage at our providers, and least-privilege access controls. No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a security incident affecting your personal information, we will notify you consistent with applicable law.

7. Your rights

  1. Access and portability. You may request a copy of the personal information associated with your account.
  2. Correction. You may correct inaccurate account information from account settings.
  3. Deletion. You may delete your account at any time from account settings. Deletion cascades to your Wants, offers, and messages, subject to the retention periods above and to information we are required or permitted by law to keep (for example, payment records and safety logs).
  4. Opt-out of non-essential communications. You can opt out of non-transactional messages using the controls we provide.
  5. Complaints. You may contact us at privacy@wantie.app with any privacy complaint.

8. California residents (CCPA/CPRA)

Categories of personal information we collect are described in Section 1. We collect information from you directly, automatically from your device, and from third-party sign-in providers and payment processors. We use it for the business purposes described in Section 2 and share it as described in Section 4. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not knowingly collect information from minors under sixteen (16). You may exercise your right to know, delete, correct, and limit use of sensitive personal information by contacting privacy@wantie.app. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.

9. Users outside the United States

The Service is intended for users located in the United States. Personal information is processed on servers in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with local law.

10. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 18, and use by anyone under 18 is prohibited. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected such information, we will delete it and terminate the account. Parents or guardians who believe we may have collected information from a minor should contact privacy@wantie.app.

11. Do Not Track

Our Service does not respond to browser Do Not Track signals because no common industry standard has been finalized. See our Cookie Policy for the choices you have.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make a material change, we will notify you by email, in the Service, or by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where required by law, by additional means.

13. Contact

Privacy questions and requests: privacy@wantie.app. General contact: see the contact page.
